This past week in ISM, I was so thankful for what this journey has in store for me. I had the opportunity to see my first surgery with my mentor, Mrs. Colleen Wooldridge. I got to see Colleen's preparation for the surgery, her interaction with patients, and her work during the surgery.
It felt amazing to finally get to be in the hospital and wearing scrubs for the first time, but for Colleen, she was truly a natural. She quickly prepared for her first case and did a great job walking me through her process. She was very efficient and even prepared for her cases after. I saw her true kindness show through as she interacted with the patient. She made quick conversation but it was clear that the patient trusted her. Watching her work during the surgery was truly like an art as she would quickly access and address any issues that could arise. She kept me informed the entire time but did not overwhelm me with a lot of information.
I am so thankful for my first visit with Colleen, and I know that as time progresses I will learn more and more every time. This upcoming week, I will continue to prepare for my speech, learn from Colleen, and prepare for my final project.
